about Cochineal | paper

The most commonly known Cochineal is Dactylopius coccus, a parassitic insect considered native from Central america. It grows on cacti, feeding on moisture and nutrients from the pads.

Cochineal farms grow these 2-3 millimeter large insects, feed them, dry them and grind them into powder. It is from this powder that the color is extracted - in the form of carminic acid. Carminic acid is used in a number of different industries, and is known as E120, in colorants for food, drinks, make-up etc
