oak galls

about oak galls

Oak galls are formed when a type of wasp lays eggs on a oak tree. Wasp and oak type need to be "matching" creating the conditions for the gall to form.

Are the most commonly used tannin - for both creating blacks and for pre mordanting cotton and other vegetable fibers.

Harvestable in August & September in Amsterdam. When collected in summer, check for wasp escape holes. If teh galls are still intact, leave outdoors for possible last wasps to leave the galls.
