One of the oldest and most reliable biochromes of the botanical world - providing us with the famous red. Of madder, we care for the roots - which appear orange and yellow while growing.
Madder is actually the great holder of all warm shades of color - from deep reds to brown and purples; from warm tans to oranges and yellows, passing by corals and pinks in its lighter shades. Often referred to as "native" for Europe, it is actually native from Asia. In the Netherlands it became an incredibly important crop - growing well in the sandy soils - to the point that the dutch created "steamhouses" to prepare and accellerate the dye creation within the madder roots.
The plant also produces some small flowers, from which the seeds later on grow as small black berries - often seen also as "twin berries".
