Tulips - Tulipa - are a genus of spring-blooming bulbs. The variety "Queen of Night" tulips have an almost black appereance, lightly shaded in maroon-purple, are late bloomers in comparison to other tulip species. The first truly black looking tulip was crafted in Holland mid-eighties. The specimen was created by cross-breeding two deep purple tulips, the Queen of the Night and Wienerwald tulips.

The biochromes produced by them is most probably an anthocyanin in the form of tulipanin.
