about acorn
Acorns growing on the commonly called "Turkey oak tree" (Quercus cerris), have a cap that is beautifully textured with spikes, often its infact called a "hairy acorn". The acorns caps contain tannins, that react beautofully with iron. On their own they are able to produce warm browns and when modified with ferrous sulfate, they release a deep grey, with greenish hues. This species of Oak tree grows in most of Europe, and often harbours the gall wasp Andricus quercuscalicis, creating additional tannin source.
