about Annatto | wool

Annatto, also known as achiote in the spanish language, is a dye coming from the fruits of the Bixa Orellana tree. The fruit is shaped into pods that hold the red seeds, which are covered in a powder containing the red colourant - which is mainly made up by carotenoids, bixing and norbixin. It's often known for its culinary use, but has also been used in cosmetics and dyeing. The tree is native from central and south america, where the colorant has a known history of being used for rituals and traditional cosmetic practises for hairy and skin.
